Up until recently, most of us haven’t had to stay at home with our school-aged children for extended (and unexpected) periods of time. In these situations, it’s essential that parents provide their children with stimulating learning resources. Doing this not only keeps the kids learning and focused on positive, educational ideas, but it also gives parents time to work, clean, prepare food, or to simply take a moment for themselves.
With that in mind, we’ve assembled a list of educational resources designed for at-home learning. These resources are mostly aimed at school-aged children, and all the content listed below is free.
Math and Science

Known as being one of the top choices for online learning with an emphasis on video-based content, Khan Academy offers a wide range of courses, but the math and science content is by far the most robust. Math Learning Center(new window)
This site offers a variety of free math publications and apps aimed at students from K – 12 in .pdf and ePUB format. EDX(new window)
EDX offers university-level courses for free, with certificates being offered for purchase open course completion. The site looks and feels like a high-level online university, with detailed course descriptions, syllabus, Video transcripts, and more. English and Writing IXL(new window)
With an exclusive focus on English and Math, IXL offers courses that range from pre-kindergarten to grade 12. Courses are arranged by grade, and then further organized by skill. IXL also provides diagnostic and guidance tools designed to help your child get the most of his/her online learning experience. Quill(new window)
This online writing resource offers writing-focused lessons, teaching tools, diagnostics, plus, a built-in proofreading and grammar checker. Reading and Literacy Improving Literacy(new window)
This universally designed website offers eBooks written for children between ages 7 and 10. eBooks can be read or listened to on virtually any device, making this approach to reading highly accessible. Scholastic Classroom Magazines(new window)
Scholastic classroom magazines offers materials designed for children from pre-kindergarten to grade 9. The content here is highly visual and exploratory in nature, but, if you’re looking for a more rigid, school-like experience, you might want to look elsewhere. This New Brunswick-based service offers eBooks and audiobooks to anyone with a New Brunswick library card. Most of the content is designed for kids and teens. CELA Library(new window)
CELA library is a public library service for Canadians with print disabilities, and as such offers more robust accessibility options. Similar to OverDrive, CELA library requires a valid library card. French E-Books for Children Ebookids(new window)
Ebookids.com offers a collection of French language eBooks designed for ages 3-10. And, because even parents sometimes struggle to find French content, eBookids also has a “Parents” section that covers a wide variety of topics. Boukili App(new window)
