A woman working on a math problem

Mathway is a problem-solving app designed to not only solve math equations but to also explain the steps required to arrive at the correct answer. This can be especially helpful for students who are learning at home, for those who do not have access to a tutor, or even for adults who simply wish to check their math. Whatever the case may be, math apps such as the one we’re looking at today are invaluable tools for those who struggle with math, as they allow learners to double check their answers as well as their methodology.

How to use it:

  1. Install and open the app. If it’s your first time using Mathway, an automated tutorial will pop up on screen. Take a moment to participate in this tutorial. It only takes about 15 seconds.

  2. Select the appropriate math subject. Choices include basic math, pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus, statistics, finite math, linear algebra, chemistry, and graphing.

  3. Next provide the math equation to be solved. This can be accomplished a few different ways:

    a. Select the camera icon and take a picture of the math problem to be solved.

    b. Type the math problem directly into the app.

    c. Tap on the microphone icon and speak the math problem aloud.

  4. Submit your equation by tapping on the send button. The answer to your equation will show up on screen, and for premium users, a full step-by-step breakdown of the problem will be provided.

  5. The answers provided by the app can then be copied shared, or re-calculated.

  6. If you’re stuck, or you want to learn more about the app and how to use it, tap on the settings icon on the top right-hand side of the screen and select “Help”.

Mathway is available for iOS and Android, and a browser-based version is also available for PC users. Please note that a premium subscription is required in order to have access to the step-by-step breakdown. Click here(new window) to learn more.
