In the last couple decades, educators have learned a lot about effective study techniques. And while there isn’t a one-size-fits-all option that works for everyone, it’s become apparent that keeping students engaged in the material is of the upmost importance in ensuring students actually retain what they learn. This is especially true in 2021 where most of us are hyper-connected to our smartphones and social media and all the distractions that come with it. Not to mention during the current covid-19 pandemic, not every student is getting sufficient access to teachers, aides, tutors, or even their peers.
Kahoot is a gamified study platform designed to help fill that gap, and it encourages users to have fun while learning and studying. Users earn points for completing or creating quizzes, which they can do alone or with others. Group study leagues encourage group participation and create a sense of competition and connection among fellow students. The points that players earn can then be used to unlock unique characters called e-motes, thus creating an in-game economy that will further encourage players to study and compete as much as possible.
The app also features branded content from Disney, Star Wards, Marvel, Angry Birds, National Geographic, and more. These branded study sessions still feature relevant classroom content, but they do so in the context of the universe in which these characters exist, making it especially fun for fans of a particular franchise or character.
There is a wide variety of game modes from self-paced to study sessions to online tournaments featuring dozens of participants. Users can also create their own challenges and add their own cover images, description, questions, etc.
The discover tab allows users to search for whatever they find engaging, and because of the size of the user base, there is a lot of content to choose from.
Kahoot also features a built-in read-aloud option that supports 37 languages including French, so users who struggle with or are new to reading can still enjoy the app.
Kahoot’s core features are available for free, with premium content subscription plans available to purchase. The app is available for iOS, Android, and Chrome browser. Click here(new window) to learn more.
