Today we are going to look at an early learning math app intended for students from age three to six. Magrid is a language-free math app designed to be used by students from a variety of linguistic and academic backgrounds. It’s also designed to be approachable for students with diverse learning styles.

The app features a variety of visual spatial activities including mental rotation, mental folding, working memory, eye-hand coordination, geometry and pattern, and visual perception. There are also a variety of numerical exercises available including extended learning, number comparison, ordinality, quantity recognition, number mapping, and number recognition.

What makes this app unique is that there are virtually no written instructions. Instead, the app relies on an animated hand to demonstrate how to complete and activities as well as navigate through the app. The visual nature of the app and lack of written instructions makes it a great choice for non-English speakers, visual learners, students who struggle with written instructions, and students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia.

Of course, even though the app lessons themselves are visual only and language-free, the app is multilingual, and supports a variety of languages including French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Progress reports are available for parents to check on their child’s work. There are some preferences to tweak, but they are very minimal. All in all the app was clearly designed with minimalism in mind. The app design is very straightforward with only a few buttons to push, so students will be less likely to be distracted or overwhelmed.

The app also features a variety of cute creatures and animations that are meant to appeal to a younger audience. Stars are given out for good performances and fireworks mark the end of a unit.

Magrid is available for iOS, Android, and every major browser. The trial version of the app is available for free, and the unlimited version of the app is available for purchase at a cost of approximately $10-$15 CDN per month. To learn more, click here (new window).
