Two students focus intently on a tablet

Not long ago, I was visiting an elementary school when a resource teacher asked me if I knew of a free math manipulative app that students could access on their iPads. I wasn’t sure what to recommend at the time, so I decided to do a little digging, and I discovered a great app that definitely deserves a mention.

Polypad by Amplify is a free virtual space where students can explore mathematical concepts using interactive manipulatives, models, and tools. Originally developed by Mathigon and now part of Amplify’s educational ecosystem, Polypad combines the flexibility of a digital whiteboard with a comprehensive collection of math resources.

At its core, Polypad is designed to help students learn through exploration. Rather than simply completing worksheets or answering multiple-choice questions, learners can build, move, and manipulate virtual objects to represent mathematical ideas. The platform includes tools for geometry, fractions, algebra, probability, data analysis, number sense, and more. Students can work with algebra tiles, fraction circles, number lines, geometric shapes, dice, spinners, graphs, and interactive coordinate planes, all within the same workspace.

One of Polypad’s greatest strengths is its versatility. Elementary students can use visual models to develop number sense and fraction understanding, while older learners can explore algebraic relationships, graph functions, investigate probability, and experiment with geometric constructions. Teachers can also customize activities, create guided lessons, or allow students to freely investigate mathematical concepts through inquiry-based learning.

The platform supports creativity beyond traditional math instruction. Interactive tools such as logic gates, music components, coordinate systems, and dynamic geometry features encourage students to make connections between mathematics, technology, and problem-solving. Recent updates have expanded authoring tools, classroom integrations, and opportunities for teachers to monitor and share student work.

The app also has some helpful accessibility features built into it such as contrast options, tile colors, and a wide variety of keyboard shortcuts.

Whether used for whole-class instruction, small-group activities, intervention support, or independent exploration, Polypad offers an engaging environment where students can experiment, discover patterns, and develop deeper mathematical understanding.

This browser-based app is completely free, which means that teachers who don’t have access to a math manipulative app through their district catalogue can still access this tool. To learn more, click here(new window).
