In today’s e-bulletin, we’re going to look at a new device that supports Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology. But first, what is OCR? Simply put, Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a technology that allows users to convert physical documents into a digital format which can then be searched, edited and read aloud. Documents can be scanned using any smartphone, tablet, or iPad that has a built-in camera, and the necessary app(s). There are a wide variety of scanning apps available for free or for purchase, but some of our favorites include Office Lens, ClaroPDF, and PrizmoGo. What the means is that virtually all of us have the ability to scan and digitize physical documents using technology we likely already have.
Of course, no technology is perfect, and AT users who scan a high volume of documents know that free-hand OCR scanning can sometimes be a tedious and inconsistent process. The ScanJig was designed to simply and streamline that process. The ScanJig is a scanning stand for mobile phones and tablets that allows users to place their device, as well as the document being scanned, in a fixed, functional position, allowing users to produce clearer and more consistent scans.
The device is stable, with non-slip rubber feet that grip the tabletop. Built-in guides make it easy for the user to position the device and document. The ScanJig’s angled design is meant to allow more light into the capture, creating brighter, clearer documents. The device is also portable and can be folded down and placed within a backpack or carry bag. No additional apps or complicated technology is required with this device, it’s simply meant to improve the functionality of the scanning apps that AT users are already using. We see this device being especially helpful for individuals who are visually impaired or have fine motor difficulties as it will streamline and improve both the physical process of scanning, as well as the quality of the finished product.
