Dictionaries are a great tool for you to have at your disposal, whether you are a student or a professional. But it’s not always practical to carry around a physical copy of one at all times. And, even if you use a word processor such as Word, you don’t always get the best (or the most) suggestions.
The Dictionary.com app is a great alternative. It offers an online dictionary, thesaurus, and a ton of extra features. And because it is a smartphone app, it is much more accessible than a book. You can actually use your voice to search for words, which is especially handy when searching for a word you have heard but haven’t seen in print. The app also provides audio pronunciations of the words you are searching for, which is great for non-native English speakers or for when you are searching for words that you have never heard pronounced before.

Dictionary.com also provides lists of meaning categories that are useful to explore. You can search through lists of words related to emojis, slang, acronyms, pop culture, memes, and gender. There’s also a great variety of word games available. There are a variety of quizzes, word puzzles, crosswords, and even a built-in scrabble word finder. The app also provides words and synonyms of the day, writing tips and grammar tips, and other word related lessons.
Dictionary.com (new window) is a free app available for iOS and Android. However, the basic function of the app, i.e. searchable dictionary and thesaurus, is available on any browser. It’s also worth noting that there are upgrade options available, such as offline mode, example sentences, ad-removal, and more, but the great thing about this app is that you really don’t need these upgrades to enjoy the full functionality of the online dictionary or thesaurus, and the app doesn’t limit your usage in any way, unlike many other online dictionaries that will limit your word searches in order to persuade you to purchase a subscription.
